$10 Eagle: A Gold Bullion Beauty
Launched by the United States Mint in 1986, the authentic $10 Eagle bullion coin first found mention in the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 with the publishing of its authorized release. The coin actually has three denominations based on the amount of gold present in each. Each coin has been verified by the United States government to contain the amount of gold printed on its facing.
Legally an Eagle coin has to contain American gold but it will also contain amounts of copper and silver to make it harder since pure gold is very soft. The $10 Eagle coin maintains the same 22 karat gold standard of other U.S. gold coins, and the weight and purity are guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.
The modern U.S. $10 Eagle is undoubtedly a great piece of art. On the obverse, it displays the complete figure of Lady Liberty having flowing hairs, an olive branch in her left and a torch in her right hand. On the left background is the Capitol building. On the reverse is a marvelous design by sculptor Miley Busiek that displays a male eagle holding an olive branch. This male eagle is flying just above a female eagle sitting in her nest.
The word "LIBERTY" is stated on one side of the coin in bold while the other side states "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This historic coin is often used to fund one of the government's sectioned accounts for individuals who retire. The $10 Eagle coin is made at the West Point Mint in New York and also it has the mint's mark "W" located just below the date.
With a thickness of 1.83 mm, the coin has a diameter of 22 mm. From 1986 till 1991, the dates on the coin were shown in Roman numerals but in 1992 the U.S. Mint changed it to Arabic numbers. The U.S. gold Eagle coins come in other denominations besides the $10 coin, but the design remains the same for all of them.
The U.S. $10 Eagle coin is a great collectors item. Featuring the designs of "Lady Liberty" by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Miley Busiek's eagle artwork, this coin is highly sought after by coin collectors all across the globe. The coin is not only a lovely piece of art, but a currency that aids in government funding.
