Fractional California Gold

During the California Gold Rush, there was a scarcity of small denomination coins.  In 1852, private mints began producing quarter, half-dollar and dollar coins to meet the demand. Over time, the quantity of gold in the coins decreased until some were simply gold plated.  Caution: Be alert for modern replicas of Fractional California gold coins in the marketplace which are virtually worthless.
