U.S. $1 Gold Coins
The gold dollar was authorized by the U.S. government in March, 1849. This initial coin weighed 25.8 grams and was .900 fine.
The first gold dollar was the "Liberty Head", also known as the "Type 1" (small-sized type), and was produced until 1854.
The coins were made larger in 1854 and the design was changed to feature a female wearing a feather headress. These gold dollars are known as the "Indian Princess Head" or "Type 2" (large-sized type). The type was enlarged in 1856 and these became known as "Type 3".
